Gulgong History
Prior to European settlement the region was occupied by the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people. A number of historical and traditional sites have and are being developed across the Mudgee region for those keen to learn more about local Aboriginal history, including The Drip, Hands on Rock and Dunns Swamp.

In 1821 William Lawson (of Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson fame) explored the Gulgong area and in 1822 the sons of William Cox (the man responsible for the road through the Blue Mountains) extended their Mudgee land holdings into the Gulgong area.

The discovery of gold in 1866 saw the gradual growth of the Gulgong goldfields and a subsequent discovery of a rich lode (A vein of metallic ore situated in the earth) in April 1870 saw a major goldrush.

By 1872 there were reputedly 20,000 people in the area. Approximately 15,000kg of gold was removed from the Gulgong fields between 1870 and 1880.

Gulgong’s history is abundant and varied, with links to Henry Lawson and other famous authors, beautiful historical churches and well maintained buildings that celebrate the yesteryears.
Come and stay for a few nights and immerse yourself in our beautiful town, you won’t be disappointed.

THINGS TO DO

Step outside your comfortable lodgings to find beautiful historical buildings, classic country homes and rambling streets, the Red Hill Environment Education Centre and renowned Pioneer and Holtermann Museums. Additionally, there are numerous country cafes, great eateries, pubs, and many small-town conveniences.

Step back in time
With a historic streetscape largely unchanged since the 1800s, visiting Gulgong is like stepping back in time. There are around 130 National Trust-listed buildings, many still adorned with wide verandahs and iron lacework. See Australia’s oldest opera house, the Prince of Wales Opera House, operating since 1871, and where the great Dame Nellie Melba once performed.

Gold fever struck the region in 1870, when payable gold was found at nearby Red Hill and 20,000 people flocked to the area. Prior to that, Gulgong was just a sheep run, a large property for raising sheep. Learn about the gold rush at the Gulgong Pioneers Museum and on the Gulgong Gold Experience.

Home of Henry Lawson
The great Australian writer and bush poet Henry Lawson spent his childhood in the picturesque area. Scenes of Lawson’s childhood years in goldmining towns such as Gulgong appeared on the first Australian ten-dollar note. Discover more about his cultural legacy at the Henry Lawson Centre and explore the remnants of Henry’s childhood home, located on Henry Lawson Drive between Gulgong and Mudgee

The town celebrates Lawson’s life with the Henry Lawson Heritage Festival every June long weekend. Other fun annual festivals include the Gulgong Folk Festival showcasing traditional folk music in December, and the week-long Clay Gulgong event in April that attracts ceramic artists from around Australia and the world.

For the thrill-seeking motorbike riders out there, we are located only 20 minutes from Freeflight motorcycle complex. Our accommodation also offers convenient off-street parking and lockable facilities for those with bikes (both motor and push).
